Healthy Foods From Cajun Country
When people think about New Orleans & Cajun Louisiana foods, they usually think of rich, delicious mouth-watering dishes but don't always associate it with healthy eating
However there are lots of great Louisiana foods, condiments,
seasonings and spices that might be considered on a Healthy Eating menu list. Here's a few to consider...
Crawfish:
Crawfish are a great Cajun treat. And they're also very healthy! They're high in protein and minerals, and low in fat and calories. Crawfish are well within the 300-milligram daily limit of cholesterol recommended by the American Heart Association and the National Academy of Sciences. In fact, crawfish provide just a fraction of what is recommended for fat and saturated fat.
Shrimp:
Shrimp are abundant in the Louisiana gulf stream waters. And they're found in lots of New Orleans & Cajun dishes. They're also an excellent source of selenium and unusually low-fat, low-calorie protein, and less than a gram of fat. Shrimp has also emerged as a very good source of vitamin D
& vitamin B12.
They provide large cardiovascular benefits and, like crawfish, gulf shrimp are well within the 300-milligram recommended daily limit of cholesterol.
South Louisiana Aromatic Rice:
Try a few bags of Creole Rose Aromatic Rice. In addition to it's great taste, this rice is an excellent source of folate, and a good source of iron, niacin and thiamin.
Dips & Salsas:
Zapp's Cajun Bean Dip Only 1gm of of fat per serving
Louisiana Yams:
Bruce's Cut Yams Certified Heart Healthy and great as a side dish. Try some candied yams for your next meal. It's a Louisiana favorite - and it's grown right here in Cajun Country.
Sweet Potato Pancakes & More :
Bruce's Sweet Potato Pancakes, Muffins & Bisquits A Southern Treat, and great for a tasty, healthy
breakfast or any time of day. They're rich in essential vitamins and minerals,
